It is well known that Rahmi M. Koç continued to write under all conditions, whether in ocean conditions or in calm weather, during his travels. He writes about the sea and thinks about the sea. Because he cares about sharing his passion for the sea. In the text below, this time Rahmi M. Koç takes a look at sea manners. He puts the subtleties of living together at sea, the tricks of boat life, on paper in his unique, ironic style, and he creates a rare maritime manifesto.
Whether you call it "sea etiquette", "sea forms of politeness" or "sea code of conduct", maritime and yachting has its own subtleties and principles that must be followed.
These are not laws, and as far as I know, they are not listed one under the other. If you do not comply with them, no one will say to you, "What a rude person!", "What an ill-mannered man!" or "Who does he think he is because he has three pennies?".
Many yachts have been built and many have been imported in our country in the last 4-5 years. Despite this, the number of yachts in our country is still lower than other countries. As yachting progresses and develops, some rules have to be imposed by the official authorities, both for yacht owners, captains and sailors.
I'm not a sailor by birth. I was not born by the sea. There is no one in the family who can be considered a sailor. However, I love the sea, find it very relaxing, and have started collecting information about the sea. I listed these according to myself.
While there may be those who agree with me, there will also be those who disagree, perhaps saying, "He is being arrogant.". The purpose is to have a few joyful moments.
It is possible to easily divide yachting into two categories:
-
Marina yachting
-
Sea yachting
Marina yachting is an ecole of its own. In this kind of yachting:
Yacht owners, captains, sailors, cooks, guests and clothing styles are also unique. Especially in this type of yachting, the boat must be fancy and stylish rather than sailor-like, its kitchen and ice machine must be well-functioning, its bar must have plenty of liquor stock, and it must be in the best strategic location of the marina. Marina yachters (both the men and women) have a rich wardrobe. They change dresses every day and chat with the boats next door. With a drink in hand, they watch those passing by. The aim of this type of yachting is for the yacht to be large and comfortable. The one who has the largest yacht has the right to overlook at the others sarcastically. However, they are obliged to take others under their wing due to both their needs and height differences.
The sailors and captains of the marina yachters cook good food, give good service, know how to provide drinks to keep their guests entertained, and take their guests swimming for the day.
This type of yachting has beautiful boutiques. There are stores specialized in this field, especially in Italy and France. Whatever you buy, the colors blue, white, red and yellow dominate and are always decorated with images of anchors, ropes, compasses, pennants and ships. One of them was even selling toilet paper with a rope on it. Like an anchor is coming towards the end.
Since marina yachters use their yachts as their social activities and summer homes, they treat the employees in the marina very well, they do not object to wages and prices (and they tip generously) as long as their phones work, their water runs, and their electricity is not cut off.
In contrast, sea yachting is completely different. Their yachts are smaller but seafaring. The owners, and generally the captains, are people who know their job and stop by the marina on their way from one place to another. Since the budgets of these types of people are generally limited, they continue their maritime activities with great sacrifices. Apart from the owner, they usually have one or two sailors and they share their fate with these people. They prefer the sailor boss to the marina boss because he gives equal treatment even though he pays less. Sea yachters consider marinas as places to stay to meet their needs for a certain period of time, and as soon as that work is done, they go to a quiet bay, even if it is in the evening. For them, tranquility and being with themselves are their greatest luxury and foremost desire.
The real yachters are very simple and preferably do not wear new clothes. For them, a pair of shorts and a t-shirt sufficient at the marina. They mostly use their financial means to make their boats more seaworthy and better. The stores where these types of yachters shop are places that sell yacht equipment rather than boutiques.
Foods are simple, sometimes dry, sometimes heated dishes. They also like drinking, chatting and visiting another real yachters. They draw nets and love to eat from the net they cast the night before.
And there are racing sailors as well. These guys spend the whole year renewing their boats, equipment, strategies and teams in order to get better results in the summer races. I see their boats in our Küçüksu; some change their keel, some the mast, some the propeller. Of course, sailboat for them is like the clothes in our wardrobe. Their boats change their outfits according to each wind angle and speed. Cranes and ropes are the expense items that are not noticeable at first glance. Yacht racing is an expensive pleasure.
Whether it is a marina yachter, a sea yachter or a racing yachter, the thing they all have in common is cleanliness. Yachters are generally clean, or they sincerely desire to keep their boats clean. The difference in cleanliness comes from the fact that some yachts are cared for more meticulously than others for sure. If the sailor has a beard, dirty shorts, and bare feet are dirtier than shoes, the yacht owner cannot expect a sparkling clean boat from him.
-
If you are going to board a friend's yacht, even if you are invited, you will first ask for permission. When you get on board, shake the hands of the sailor and captain, in addition to the owner, to show that you care about and consider him.
-
When the yacht owner arrives at his/her yacht, the staff (whether one or several) must meet the invitee on the deck, shake his/her hand, and pull his pennant, if any, to the starboard side of the main mast.
-
No matter who you are, you cannot go on a yacht with shoes on. Even if the soles of your shoes are made from rubber, please offer to take them off, and even if the yacht owner insists, then take them off, let his/her sailor wipe the bottoms, and please put them on again. If you are coming as an invited guest, please bring a pair of shoes that have never touched the ground before and put them on. This way you display how much care you take to the yacht owner and his yacht and so, your chances of being called back increase.
-
If you are going to a friend's yacht to spend the night or spend the weekend, please do not go with a suitcase, go with a soft bag or a sailor's bag.
-
Please make sure to bring them a small gift to show that you are thinking of them. A bottle of wine, a cupcake or a jar of home-made jam would be appreciated.
-
Please do not undress until you are shown where you are going to sleep.
-
Please do not ask for a drink until you are offered a drink in the evening.
-
If you do not know your friend well, please ask about the boat's living habits and prepare yourself accordingly.
-
Never stand at the doorway or inside the boat in a way that could disrupt traffic.
-
Nothing, including paper, is thrown into toilets in general. If you accidentally or ritually throw something into the toilet on a yacht, please immediately notify either the sailor or the yacht owner of the situation before it disrupts the mechanism. This is very important, especially on yachts with a single toilet. Papers are often placed in a box or basket containing a plastic bag. Later on, a sailor cleans this basket.
-
If you need to turn on a tap to use the toilet, please do not forget to turn it off when you are done.
-
On a yacht, neither sit on the sidelines like a guest and wait for everyone to serve you, nor act as a busybody, attempt, enter the kitchen and become the head chef.
-
No matter how small the yacht is, it is beneficial to get yourself in order in the evenings. Don't hold a fashion show or sit down at the dinner table wearing the shorts and t-shirt you've been wearing all day. Try not to wear brand-new clothing, preferably.
-
At noon, whether it is a buffet or five o'clock tea, do not come to the table naked (even if you are wearing a swimsuit), please make sure you put on a shirt or T-shirt. If ladies are wearing a one-piece swimsuit, it would be stylish to wrap a pareo around their waist.
-
Please assist the sailor or yacht owner in managing the yacht on which you are a guest, but do not make his/her job difficult. Just do whatever you are told to do and wait for instructions from the owner or the captain to take any other action.
-
If you are going to board the yacht's rubber boat from the beach, please take off your shoes there. So, please go on the boat with bare feet.
-
Please use fresh water carefully on all yachts (including those with water purifiers). For men, please do not run the water while shaving. If you need to take a shower, first wet your body, turn off the tap, soap yourself thoroughly and then rinse. It would be wise to first ask the yacht owner about the water situation.
-
Another essential item on yachts is ice. Especially in warm waters. Ice, like water, must be used carefully. Because the ice machine often runs on with a generator. If there are ice cubes, then the amount is certain. So, it is necessary to use it without melting or wasting it.
-
If you are at a port or marina with a friend whose yacht you are visiting and you see another friend, neither invite that friend without asking the yacht owner, nor leave the yacht owner alone and go to your other friend's yacht and linger for hours.
-
If you are going to go out with your friend's boat for the weekend and will not return with him/her, please let him/her know in advance where and when you will go. Please do not make such a request in the last minute.
-
No matter whether the ship you board is large or small, please do not leave your belongings such as suntan oil, towels, swimsuits, glasses, slippers and scarves behind when you are done. These mat cause mess, get lost or you may just forget.
-
Especially to the attention of ladies, please do not apply sun oil and sleep on a yacht with a teak deck. Please be sure to spread either your own towel or a sea towel if provided.
-
If you are going to go swimming, please do not jump from the boat without asking how to get back on. Do not throw yourself into the sea from the end of the sea ladder. These are generally weak, if you hit your foot, they will not stand and you will fall into the sea.
-
When swimming in the sea, pay attention to which side the toilets are on, whether they are being used or not, and the sea flow.
-
It is generally not appropriate to smoke on yachts, especially while sailing, but if you are going to smoke, ask permission from the owner. For safety reasons, avoid smoking in the cabins. If you are going to smoke outdoors, take a tobacco tray (with a wind shield, made for marine use) and smoke under the wind.
-
If the food or whatever is being eaten is served on individual plates, please be careful not to spill it on the floor. If anything spills on the deck, carpet or upholstery, please immediately warn the sailor and have it wiped up. Please deliver the plates and cutlery yourself.
-
If you know more about the sea than the yacht owner, please put him/her in an awkward position before his/her guests and crew.
-
If it is necessary depending on the course of the ship, please close your cabin's porthole. Please inform the sailor or captain that you have done this.
-
The clothes you wear on yachts should not have anchors, ropes, ship flags or motifs. Never and ever wear a jacket or sweater, especially one with fake emblems. On the other hand, vests or anoraks used for hunting and snow skiing seem weird for the sea.
-
Especially on cruises lasting more than one day, please bring newspapers, magazines, books or reading materials to keep you busy. Please do not ask the owner to entertain you all the time. A guest who keeps oneself busy takes a great burden off the owner's shoulders.
-
If you have an invitation to visit or a restaurant to go to while you are at sea, then the yacht owner should inform you about the care of your clothes in a timely manner and not leave you in an awkward position in terms of clothing.
-
You will definitely thank them when leaving the yacht, but if you have any photos you took, it would be a good gesture to send them to the owner with a nice letter a few days later.

Marina and Anchoring Manners
-
Most yachters go to the sea to relax, unwind, and dream in their own world.
-
When you anchor in a quiet bay, a boat will come to you as if there is no room. It approaches and anchors very close almost hitting you in a huge bay. Arabesque music starts, screaming songs, shouts, sometimes saz are played. This is all good, there is democracy and all, but if this uproar continues after midnight, it would be both disrespectful and shameful.
-
You enter a marina, and two boats are on either side of you. There is no sound in one of them whereas in the other one, there is a loud noise even though it has no owner. The sailor turned the radio at full blast and left. Tape music undermines your brain, and if you ask it to turn off, you'll be a bad person.
-
A boat in the marina with a beautiful and liberally undressed lady approach, next to it is one of our famous gulets, and there is no owner. Sailors leave their jobs, any other wandering whittlers come together, and they "peep" that female from morning till night. This is very shameful.
-
When you are at the marina and a boat wants to dock next to you, please be sure to help. Please take their rope and tie it. If their fenders are not sufficient, tie one to them (and don't forget to take it back later). If it's a yacht smaller than yours, ask if they need it.
-
After berthing at the marina, please do not get into a fight with a neighboring boat over water.
-
If the smell and noise of your generator bother, please do not operate it. Or, turn it on when your neighbors are not going out. If that doesn't work, go out of the marina for a moment and recharge your batteries.
-
Please keep a small extra Turkish flag with you. Give the Turkish flag as a gift to a foreign yachter whose flag is very worn out, he/she will understand it.
-
Please do not wash yourself with fresh water in front of your boat in the marina or on land, using soap like in a bath. If you need to wash, please do it by your own boat.
-
The issue of garbage in the marina is also important in terms of both appearance and health. If there is no waste bin, please put your garbage in a nylon bag, tighten it tightly and leave it.
-
If you are leaving the marina very early in the morning, please notify the boats on both sides preferably. Please leave with minimum noise. Please do not start the engine one hour before your departure.
-
After going out for dinner or entertainment, please do not return to the boat in the small hours and have a noisy chat session there.
-
While washing the boat, inform the boats particularly the ones lower than yours and next to you. Let them close their portholes so that their cabins get wet.
-
Make sure you do not enter the marina after midnight. If you are absolutely to do so, please enter as quietly as possible and without disturbing the neighboring boats. If there are tasks to be left for the morning, please do not do them after midnight.
