The impact of yachting on the environment is far greater than you can imagine. Even the most environmentally conscious sailors still have a lot to learn. The new year is a good opportunity for this!
Although sailing may at first glance appear to be an environmentally friendly activity, in reality it has significant burdens on the environment. While wind may seem to be the main driving force for sailing boats, internal combustion engines are also commonly used at sea. Various chemicals are used in boat maintenance. There is also the issue of waste. Diesel residues from boats, cleaning products and other toxic substances can easily enter the water in marinas.
When you look at it this way, it is clear that we all have an important role in protecting marine ecosystems for future generations and promoting responsible seafaring. So, in the new year, we encourage you to make the following five key resolutions:
1st Resolution: I will stick to the sail!
Although sailboats use much less fuel than a vessel or other watercraft, their use on a global scale is still significant. Therefore, I will improve my sailing skills and try to become a sailor who needs less fuel.
2nd Resolution: I will choose the correct care method!
When choosing an environmentally friendly paint for the boat, it is essential to opt for "low VOC" or "VOC-free" paints as they emit fewer harmful emissions. I will, from now on, prefer water-based paints with less toxic chemicals, non-biocidal anti-fouling paints, and paints with eco-certifications such as "EcoLogo" or "Green Seal".
3rd Resolution: I will be more careful about waste!
I will use a pumping station designed for the purpose of sewage discharge to prevent pollution of coastal waters. I will collect my garbage so that it does not go into the sea and separate it for recycling. Thus, I will minimize the ecological footprint of my boat.
4th Resolution: I will be careful with marine creatures!
When cruising by boat, I will keep a safe distance from marine creatures and reduce my speed when passing through their habitats. If I accidentally encounter one, I will immediately turn off the engine and wait for it to move away. I will always prioritize the welfare of marine creatures over my own welfare.
5th Resolution: I will anchor with caution!
I will avoid anchoring on or near reefs. When anchoring, I will be careful not to damage marine vegetation and not to make maneuvers that could jeopardize such delicate environments. I will pay special attention to seagrasses (posidonia oceanica). I will take into account the bottom of the water as much as the top of the water.
Sailing and yachting impose responsibilities on us to the extent that they strengthen our bond with nature. Arguably the most important aspect of fulfilling this responsibility is to continue to learn and evolve in terms of sustainability and environmentalism.
Happy navigating in the new year, with more care!
